ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
Kashmir has a vibrant art community yet there is no place for artists to engage in dialogue, discuss, produce and share work which has a severe effect on its visual art scene. Being at the crossroads of turmoil for years most of the avenues have disappeared or shut over the time due to various political and social reasons. There has been a constant seeking and need to listen to, express and speak while simultaneously also engage with wider art community.
YCK and this residency programme becomes an initiating thought to lay the foundation for manifesting such a space in Kashmir. YCK through this residency imagines to engage and develop a place of exchange with a larger art community of South Asia. Engaging with artists and institutes in and outside Kashmir every year will seed possibilities to exchange and engage in a dialogue creatively and critically with the existing scholarship on Kashmiri Art Scene and add the discourses around it.
WHO WE SERVE
We are interested in artists working across mediums and disciplines (visual, sound, creative text, performance and dance) who engage with announced themes. We are proposing a question, ‘on announced theme’ as a provocation to think and engage into a conversation and initiate a dialogue among various histories, disciplines, geographies, communities, languages, and contexts. This dialogic practice is necessary to involve and immerse oneself to re-think, re-imagine and re-understand the subversive discourses and the question of identity.
Artists in their initial or mid career from South Asia are eligible for this residency. Selected artists will work in collaboration with young emerging artists from Kashmir. Each artist will be required to submit a proposal and go through the due selection process.
HOW WE SERVE
Applicants will be selected for a month-long residency which would culminate into an open day showcase. A minimum of one seat reservation is made for an artist from Kashmir. The reservation becomes essential to generate a dialogue among various practitioners based in and outside Kashmir. Each selected artist is supposed to use the space provided for research and development of work. Although it is not expected that a new work will be finalized in a month's time, but, tangible outcomes are important. The outcomes will be crucial for Open Day showcase and other interactions during the residency period. Any work produced as a result of research and development made on the residency will state the support of Yusmarg Collective Kashmir.
A limited support towards production for the open day showcase will be provided subject to the availability of funds and sponsorships.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process shall begin either by connecting with various art and culture institutions across South Asia asking for nominating artists across art practises whose practise and interests align with the YCK thematics for the residency or by announcing an open call inviting applications from artists for a residency in Kashmir. It would further seek a proposal for collaboration with one of the Kashmiri Artists whose practice responds to the questions around Kashmir and its socio-political context.
A jury of artists will shortlist the proposals for the interview round, after which the residents will be announced on web and Social Media. It is mandatory for us to have both native artists and non native artists as residents. Applications will be assessed for selection, accordingly.
Re applications from alumni can be considered for different opportunities.
